Using Wake on Lan over the interweb – static arp

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

A lot of people ask why they cannot get WoL to work over the internet. I usually tell them that the first thing they need to do is port forward – and this is usually where it breaks down because nearly all modern routers in the consumer market do not allow you to port forward to the broadcast address that WoL requires.

Well there is a way round this if you have access to your router via telnet and can add arp entries.

1. Telnet into your router and add a static arp entry – how you do this depends on your router but here is how I did it.

2. Set your router to forward UDP or Both to the ip address you used in 1. This was a right pita for me but you hopefully have a better web interface.

3. Give it a go from here and you should see something like this …. hopefully.

Shock Horror people like free stuff :)

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Well colour me shocked but it seems people like free stuff.

While it took 129 days for my paid Android app to reach 100+ downloads its only taken 11 days for the free app to reach that milestone. I would love to provide everything free :)

Wake on Lan for Android gets a free version

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

I have just uploaded a free version of Wake On Lan for Android to Google Marketplace which is an advert supported version.

It was about a year ago I finished the paid version and so far it has had 297 downloads. Lets see how long it takes the free version to get to that level.

Wake on Lan for OS X rejected…

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Well it seems that Wake on Lan for OS X 1.6 won’t be out for a few more days after being rejected for “2.30 Apps that do not comply with the Mac OS X File System documentation will be rejected”

Seems like writing to ‘~/Library/Logs/Depicus’ is not allowed. Crazy because that is where log files are written for applications. Well appeal is in so lets see what happens.
