Installing Windows Phone 7 dev tools on XP

Author: The Man

Not sure why but you can. Follow these steps.

1. Download the Windows Phone 7 dev tools from Microsoft
2. Extract out from the download vm_web.exe /x
3. Edit baseline.dat in notepad and change InstallOnLHS=0 and InstallOnWinXP=0
4. Run setup /web
5. Sit back and watch, there might be a few errors

On my install the phone emulator does not work but the developer does.

Worked..!!

Replaced all the InstallOnLHS and InstallOnWinXP with value 0 and the installation completed without showing any error. Now I am able to run ‘Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone’ on my Windows XP machine. But the Emulator is not functioning. It shows the ‘Loading’ screen, and after that gives an error message, which says ‘computer does not have the required graphics processing unit’. Now I am trying to find a fix for that also.

Thanks !!

Yes had the same issue, you need to check your graphics card is DirectX capable to a certain version. In the end mine wasn’t so got a Nokia Lumia off eBay for £150 and it works just fine :)
